Mindfulness For Pregnancy and Parenting

By Alex Blossom

Most of us spend half our lives on auto pilot.  We rush around from trying to fit everything and everyone into our busy lives. We all know that feeling of driving somewhere without remembering the journey, eating a meal without really tasting it, lost in thought. You really don't want to miss your baby growing up because you are lost in thought, so read on...

When we are pregnant we are told time and time again to slow down, to look after ourselves.  I know that I certainly didn't.  I was determined to continue running miles, not wanting to show any sign of physical weakness.  I worked until the last minute, determined to be superwoman! Physically I was really well but looking back I can see now the amazing benefits that mindfulness and relaxation could have brought to my life at that time.  Actually the best thing I could have done would have been to learn to relax, at the time I just could not see it.

So I went from a hectic life pre baby to an even more hectic life where I fitted a baby in!  He came with me everywhere, I strapped him to my front and on we went!  I Still absolutely loved it but I just wish someone had told me about mindfulness and then I would have done it all so much better.

The good thing is that it is never to late to start and that you see improvements in your life and your children from the minute that you do.  Preparing for child birth is the perfect incentive to get you into regular meditation, which is really the key to becoming mindful.  If you can learn some basic mindfulness techniques before you have your baby it really stands you in good stead.

In pregnancy relaxation and meditation techniques can rid you of aches and pains.  Brain training exercises can reduce anxiety and worry about what your body is going through.  In labor you can ease pain by staying in the moment, allowing your muscles to relax to reduce the intensity of your contractions. If you have made some headspace through meditation you can be clear thinking so you decide how you want to proceed if things don't go as per your birthing plan. In that first moment that you hold your beautiful new baby you can relax and enjoy your emotions and taking in the moment. And as you move on in your journey you can make space for yourself so that you can be a patient, kind and a truly loving parent, even when you haven't had much sleep!
