Breastfeeding Made Easy.... using the Miskin Method

By Geraldine Miskin

‘If breastfeeding is so natural, why do so many mums find it difficult?’ This is the question I was determined to solve and find answers to when I first decided to pursue a career as a breastfeeding specialist. It is the reason I bounce out of bed each morning and is the driving force behind my passion and commitment to my clients and new mums around the world.

I always believed that there had to be more to breastfeeding than simply positioning and attachment and what I found opened my eyes in ways I never imagined.

For years I studied the science behind breastfeeding, so that I could better understand the processes involved from both the mum and baby’s point of view. What I’ve learnt, is that all mums and babies are wonderfully different and when put together, different mum and baby combinations have different experiences, successes and challenges.

A lot of note taking during consultations revealed that many factors influenced breastfeeding outcomes – something mums had been telling me for years. Five key elements repeatedly popped up randomly in conversations with mums and during consultations, so I paid closer attention to them. These now constitute my methodology, The Miskin Method and are as follows:

  1. Mum’s anatomy
  2. Baby’s anatomy
  3. Baby’s age and size
  4. Labour and birth
  5. Mum’s medical history

This enabled my clients and I to work better, smarter and get super results. I listened to them and their insights and then applied what I knew to be true with regards to anatomy and physiology and the results were shocking!

So when my small breasted mums complained about recurrent blockages, frequent feeds, insufficient supply, we were able to look at things objectively and find solutions that worked for them.

When my large breasts mums complained about oversupply, a windy or colicky baby and latching challenges, we worked together to find ways to work around their challenges and create a great experience.

The approaches and care plans varied and became tailored to each mum’s experience, goals and needs.

This is what my book is all about. Learning the basics, having an idea of how your five individual key elements will influence your breastfeeding experience and then applying that knowledge to your experience.

It’s a privilege to work with and touch so many lives in person and now with my book Breastfeeding Made Easy  (http://bit.ly/breastfeedingmadeeasy). I’ve been overwhelmed by mums' responses and would love to hear what you think too.

If you want to consult with me I am on the free forum all week taking questions and offering bespoke advice and you will also find my daily tips on Jo's facebook page.

Looking forward to helping you!
